Your Music Teacher

My Teaching Philosophies

In our cosmopolitan society, Music Education exposes students to music from various cultures, providing them with glimpses of different lifestyles and social norms. Such exposure will help shape young minds to become more accepting towards differences, paving the way to a harmonious and gracious society. Music Education is a great way to engage diverse learners and a good platform to nurture 21st Century learners. As music transcends linguistic barriers, it touches lives and provides a way for one to express oneself.

Living in a digital smart nation, information can be readily available online, There is a paradigm shift in education as a whole, let alone Music Education. Educators are now facilitators of students’ learning, ensuring that the students are versatile and adaptable lifelong learners. Music Education will not be the same, post-Covid-19. Blended learning coupled with digital literacy has become part of the Music curriculum. Riding this emerging trend, blended learning is able to create a meaningful, holistic and engaging Musical experience for the students.

As a music practitioner, it is important to constantly reflect and reframe one’s approach to teaching and learning; this includes seeking out opportunities to deepen of one’s own musical knowledge and skills, as well as putting on a reflective lens to examine and review lesson taught. It is vital to create a strong network to improve one another by exchanging pedagogical knowledge and collaborate with other music teachers. In supporting one another, Music Education in classrooms and learning spaces becomes more creative and collaborative.

My approach to Music education is a spiral approach of informal student centric music education where knowledge and skills are experience-dependent and context-sensitive. An informal learning approach allows for holistic learning as each skill intertwines with another related skill that students may have prior exposure to. In this way, students can then apply such skills in the context of the lesson. Such an approach also encourages experimentation and intuitive musical choices of students in a collaborative activity. This method of learning spirals upwards to the various stages in their music education.

Every student is a unique individual with the thirst for knowledge and a curious mind who needs a caring and nurturing environment to grow emotionally, socially and intellectually. Informal learning paves the way for students to grow at their own pace, yet simultaneously offers an opportunity to try their hand in Music. Performance in Music Education provides students with a challenge and a goal for them to achieve. When students perform, they gain valuable experience and self-confidence. In order to attain that, Music Education in schools must provide an avenue in the form of a safe environment in which students can explore and showcase their talents and abilities. What the student experiences and discovers, the student remembers for life.

With individuals coming together with their unique gifts and talents, my role as a Music practitioner and educator is to ignite that passion for music and to inspire, nurture and harness creative expression. The greatest gift to a student is a Music Education that is student-centric and values-driven, crafted around their learning styles, attitudes and response.
